Motion City Soundtrack: Minimum Crowd, Maximum Choir
It was a fine Wednesday afternoon, a perfect moment to make a short trip to Balai Sartika, and attend the Heaven Rawk Tour 2013 with Motion City Soundtrack. You can see a queue made of pop punk music enthusiast lining up in front of the entrance even before the gate is opened. And finally after the endless wait, the gate finally opened at 8pm.
Some concert goers are upset because the mosh pit wasn’t as crowded as they expected it to be, but the show must go on, because this is their very first concert in Indonesia, especially in Bandung. Obviously, we saw a few local pop punk musicians like Aska and Ozom ( from Rocket Rockers) and also Dochi Sadega (from Pee Wee Gaskins), you don’t even have to ask why because we all know they came for the very people who influenced their works.
The bittersweet time began when Justin Pierre opened the show with My Favourite Accident, a song that most definitely strucks the fans with a pleasant recollection. After a nice opening, Pierre said “Glad to see you come out” and “hatur nuhun” which means “thank you” in Sundanese. One thing that you guys should know is that Justin already tweeted the Sundanese words before the show.
The second song was Her Words Destroyed My Planet. During this song, Jesse Johnson (Keyboard and Synth) made a little difference by playing The Cow Bell during the chorus, this part brought up the excitement because the mosh pit was roaring with enthusiasm. The second song succeeded in building the atmosphere that eventually leads to a thunderous choir.
A little glance at the human barricade, we were a little surprised to find some foreign faces blending in with the native.
The third song still took the audience back in time to reminisce their old album. The Future Freaks Me Out from I Am The Movie album served the crowd well with the clarity of Justin Pierre’s voice, harmonized with Joshua Cain’s guitar and a powerful beat from Tony Thaxton. Afterwards, a new song from their newest album “Go” titled The Coma Kid led to an even more thunderous choir. The crowds repeteadly asked for “When You’re Around”, and so they answered to the prayer. Cue another thunderous choir!
Appreciative audience turned the experience into something magical, A Lifeless Ordinary, Broken Heart, and Timelines led them to yet another anthem in Balai Sartika Ballroom. Meanwhile in-between one song to another, the band members took their time to show their appreciation by having light talks with the fans.
When Pierre sang the first word to Let’s Get Fucked Up and Die, every single person from the mosh pit sang along. It wouldn’t be enough for the diehard Motion City Soundtrack fans if they haven’t heard a hit single from “Even If It Kills Me” album. The song, which title was taken as the album title, is considered a sentimental song by the fans.
After crowd calmed down with Even If It Kills Me, Motion City Soundtrack brought the mood up with zestful songs like True Romance and Monsters Invisible. The last song, which is one of the most requested song, is Everything Is Alright.
But wait, that wasn’t actually the last song. A few seconds of “we want more” from the crowd and the band once stood on the stage to start an encore with a song titled Disappear. Again and again, the band led the crowd in an anthem.
The climax of the concert was a result of the last song of the encore, Hold Me Down. The reason they chose the song was because Pierre, Cain, Thaxton, Johnson and Taylor knew the fans are attached to the one gentle song from Even If It Kills Me album.
The great night ended with a great show. Heaven Rawk Tour with Motion City Soundtrack ended nicely even with the lack audience.
“Motion City Soundtrack is the richest and the most beautiful pop punk band.” A comment from Miftahus Surrur, a concert attendant.
At last, a concert even with little crowd is still great when you know it’s the audience that builds the atmosphere along with the band.
